Recordant Fernando Fernán-Gómez
L’art de desitjar
Així va titular Fernán-Gómez un llibret humorístic que aparentment tractava sobre erotisme encara que, en realitat, estava més aviat dedicat a l'ofici d'actor. En ell recull, com tantes altres vegades, reflexions molt sàvies. Divagacions, les anomena ell, encara que moltes siguin qüestions centrals de l'èsser humà. Desvela, per exemple, que des dels temps més remots els còmics són més feliços que la resta de la gent, s'ho passen millor que nosaltres. I això es deu a la seva especialització professional, la qual consisteix bàsicament a entrenar l'art de desitjar. Determinar, triar, distingir els desitjos autèntics dels falsos i seguir-los, és el fonament de la tècnica dels actors.
No és una qüestió poc important ni mancada de mèrits, i menys en els temps que corren en què tots anem per la vida ensinistrats, irremediablement domesticats fins i tot en els nostres desitjos. Fernán-Gómez assenyala que no és allò principal aconseguir allò desitjat, sinó precticar “aquest exercici tan difícil que és perdre la por als desitjos, tan activats per tots aquells que volem que desitgem només allò que a elles pugui ajudar-los a convertir en realitat els seus desitjos. En la societat que ens ha tocat viure, l'allau de notícies, la cultura imposada, l'ensenyança, les múltiples opinions difoses per diversos mitjans, al mateix temps que augmenten els possibles desitjos, dificulten la tasca de desitjar per un mateix, en relació a la pròpia naturalesa, i amb serenitat. I així ens podem preguntar si en el món acutal l'home comú sap desitjar.”
L'home i la dona comú segurament que van molt despistats, però Fernán-Gómez no ho va estar mai. Potser descendir de la millor casta de còmics del país li va donar un avantatge genètic, però hi ha també una ferma voluntat en tota la seva carrera de fidelitat a ell mateix, als seus desitjos i a les seves obres, a pit descobert, a contra corrent, contra insult i menyspreu (...) en front a un horitzó de fantasmes autoritari. I segueixo parafrasejant-lo.
No és fàcil ser actor, no és fàcir tenir talent i ser valent per inventar-se les regles de la pròpa vida sense acatar el manual d'instruccions d'altres, però molt menys fàcil és haver estat tan lliure com Fernando Fernán-Gómez.
I com afirma en el seu llibre “ en els moments en què tenim la impressió negativa de no desitjar res, encara que sapiguem que ens trobem a prop del nirvana, sentim al nostre interior el fred de la mort” i que “els desitjos són el motor de l'activitat humana i només ells produeixen les accions”, els canvis, les revolucions... Jo segueixo el seu consell i el seu desig. Desitjo que els seus llibres, les seves funcions, els personatges i les pel·lícules que va inventar així com les seves nombroses i fantàstiques entrevistes siguin constantment llegides, emeses i escoltades en un loop infinit, perquè així, al menys per a mi, Fernán-Gómez seguirà vivint per sempre.

The Art of Wishing
This is the title given by Fernán-Gómez to a small book written in a humorous tone and apparently about eroticism but, in fact, it had more to do with being an actor.
The reflections he makes in it are, as on many other occasions, extremely wise. He calls them digressions, although most of them are important matters concerning human beings. He reveals, for instance, that since far-off times, comedians have been happier than the rest, that they have a better time than us. That is due to what they have specialised in in their profession, which basically consists of training the art of wishing. The basic rule of the technique of acting is to determine, choose and distinguish authentic wishes from false ones and follow them.
This is neither a trivial nor a worthless subject, even more so if we consider the present times in which we live ,as we go through life as though we are well trained and irremediably tame, even in terms of our wishes. Fernán-Gómez points out that getting what we wish for is not the most important thing in life, but to practise “the extremely difficult exercise of not being afraid of our wishes, caused in such a way by all those who do not want us to wish anything for ourselves but for what may help them to make their wishes come true. In our present society, in the same way that the torrent of so much news, imposed culture, education and the many opinions broadcast by the various means of communication increase potential wishes, they also make wishing for something for yourself difficult, in accordance with everybody’s own nature, in a calm way. And for that reason we may ask ourselves whether in today’s world an ordinary man really knows how to wish”.
Ordinary men and women may feel quite lost, but Fernán-Gómez never did. Maybe, the fact of his having descended from the country’s best comedians gave him a genetic advantage. However, throughout his career he also had a strong will to remain faithful to himself, to his wishes and work, in a bold way, come hell or high water, despite the insults and contempt (…) while faced with an authoritarian inexistent horizon. And I am still paraphrasing him.
It is not easy to be an actor, it is not easy to be talented and be brave enough to invent the rules of one’s own life without following another person’s instruction manual, but it is even more difficult to have been as free as Fernando Fernán-Gómez was.
And as in his book he states that “ at those moments when we have the negative impression of not wishing for anything, although we know that we are close to attaining nirvana, we feel the coldness of death inside us” and that “ wishes are the driving force of human activity and only they produce actions”, changes, revolutions, I follow his advice and I wish. I wish that all his books, plays, characters, and films he invented, as well as his many fantastic interviews, be constantly read, broadcast and listened to in an endless loop, because in that way, at least for me, Fernán-Gómez will live forever.
