Recordando Fernando Fernán-Gómez
El arte de desear
Así tituló Fernán-Gómez un librito de tono humorístico que aparentemente trataba sobre erotismo aunque en realidad estava más dedicado al oficio de actor.
Recoge en él, como tantas otras veces, reflexiones muy sabias. Divagaciones, las llama él, aunque muchas sean cuestiones centrales del ser humano. Desvela, por ejemplo, que desde los tiempos más remotos los cómicos son más felices que el resto de la gente, lo pasan bastante mejor que nosotros. Y ello se debe a su especialización profesional, consistente básicamente en entrenar el arte de desear. Determinar, elegir, distinguir los deseos auténticos de los falsos y seguirlos, es el fundamento de la técnica actoral.
No es esta una cuestión baladí ni carente de méritos, y menos en los tiempos que corren en que todos andamos por la vida amaestrados, irremediablemente domesticados incluso en nuestros deseos. Fernán-Gómez señala que no es lo principal alcanzar lo deseado, sino practicar “ese ejercicio tan difícil que es perder el miedo a los deseos, tan activados por todos aquellos que no quieren que deseemos sino lo que a ellos puede ayudarles a convertir en realidad sus deseos. En la sociedad que nos ha tocado vivir el aluvión de noticias, la cultura impuesta, la enseñanza, las múltiples opiniones difundidas por diversos medios, al tiempo que aumentan los posibles deseos, dificultan la labor de desear por uno mismo, con arreglo a la propia naturaleza, y con serenidad. Y así nos podemos preguntar si en el mundo actual el hombre común sabe desear.”
El hombre y la mujer común seguramente anden muy despistados, pero Fernán-Gómez no lo estuvo jamás. Quizá descender de la mejor casta de cómicos del país le diera una ventaja genética, pero hay también una firme voluntad en toda su carrera de fidelidad a sí mismo, a sus deseos y a sus obras, a pecho descubierto, contra viento y marea, contra insulto y menosprecio (…) frente a un horizonte de fantasmas autoritario. Y sigo parafraseándole.
No es fácil ser actor, no es fácil tener talento y ser valiente para inventarse las reglas de la propia vida sin acatar el manual de instrucciones de otros, pero mucho menos fácil es haber sido tan libre como Fernando Fernán-Gómez.
Y como en su libro afirma que “en los momentos en que tenemos la impresión negativa de no desear nada, aunque sepamos que estamos cerca del nirvana, sentimos en nuestro interior el frío de la muerte” y que “los deseos son el motor de la actividad humana y que sólo ellos producen las acciones”, los cambios, las revoluciones... Yo sigo su consejo y deseo. Deseo que sus libros, sus funciones, los personajes y las películas que inventó así como sus numerosas y fantásticas entrevistas sean constantemente leídas, emitidas y escuchadas en un loop infinito, porque así, al menos para mí, Fernán-Gómez seguirá viviendo para siempre.

The Art of Wishing
This is the title given by Fernán-Gómez to a small book written in a humorous tone and apparently about eroticism but, in fact, it had more to do with being an actor.
The reflections he makes in it are, as on many other occasions, extremely wise. He calls them digressions, although most of them are important matters concerning human beings. He reveals, for instance, that since far-off times, comedians have been happier than the rest, that they have a better time than us. That is due to what they have specialised in in their profession, which basically consists of training the art of wishing. The basic rule of the technique of acting is to determine, choose and distinguish authentic wishes from false ones and follow them.
This is neither a trivial nor a worthless subject, even more so if we consider the present times in which we live ,as we go through life as though we are well trained and irremediably tame, even in terms of our wishes. Fernán-Gómez points out that getting what we wish for is not the most important thing in life, but to practise “the extremely difficult exercise of not being afraid of our wishes, caused in such a way by all those who do not want us to wish anything for ourselves but for what may help them to make their wishes come true. In our present society, in the same way that the torrent of so much news, imposed culture, education and the many opinions broadcast by the various means of communication increase potential wishes, they also make wishing for something for yourself difficult, in accordance with everybody’s own nature, in a calm way. And for that reason we may ask ourselves whether in today’s world an ordinary man really knows how to wish”.
Ordinary men and women may feel quite lost, but Fernán-Gómez never did. Maybe, the fact of his having descended from the country’s best comedians gave him a genetic advantage. However, throughout his career he also had a strong will to remain faithful to himself, to his wishes and work, in a bold way, come hell or high water, despite the insults and contempt (…) while faced with an authoritarian inexistent horizon. And I am still paraphrasing him.
It is not easy to be an actor, it is not easy to be talented and be brave enough to invent the rules of one’s own life without following another person’s instruction manual, but it is even more difficult to have been as free as Fernando Fernán-Gómez was.
And as in his book he states that “ at those moments when we have the negative impression of not wishing for anything, although we know that we are close to attaining nirvana, we feel the coldness of death inside us” and that “ wishes are the driving force of human activity and only they produce actions”, changes, revolutions, I follow his advice and I wish. I wish that all his books, plays, characters, and films he invented, as well as his many fantastic interviews, be constantly read, broadcast and listened to in an endless loop, because in that way, at least for me, Fernán-Gómez will live forever.
